FarmWorks develops miniature Active Inference models and applications for agricultural and ecological contexts. The project has produced a public FarmWorks page and a 2024 publication describing the approach of treating farm and soil systems as active inference agents.
Overview
FarmWorks applies Active Inference concepts to agricultural systems — treating farms, soil ecosystems, and crop cycles as generative models that sense and act in their environments. The project develops mini-projects, models, and publications demonstrating how Active Inference illuminates ecological decision-making and farm management.
Publications and Past Work
The project produced a 2024 publication, "FarmWorks: Decentralized AI Agents for Personalized Solutions," describing a platform for human-AI interaction in agriculture that enables personalized, farm-scale solutions and resists the power concentration associated with centralized AI systems. A related grant proposal was submitted in September 2024. The project maintains a FarmWorks overview page describing the theoretical grounding and practical applications, and work includes model prototypes and documentation for soil and agricultural Active Inference.
Participate
FarmWorks welcomes ecologists, agricultural scientists, modelers, and anyone interested in applying Active Inference to biological and ecological systems.
