The Institute is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization incorporated in Delaware, USA. Governance is exercised through a Board of Directors supported by Officers for operations and a Scientific Advisory Board for scholarly guidance. This structure ensures that the Institute's direction reflects both sound governance and scientific integrity. Core governance documents, such as the Bylaws, are publicly available; the Institute also maintains a broader internal policy and process library that supports day-to-day operations.

The Institute is a Delaware nonprofit corporation, and Delaware nonprofit corporations have formal corporate Members — a governance layer distinct from the Board of Directors. Members hold the voting rights reserved to them under the Institute's bylaws, including approving Board of Directors elections and approving amendments to the bylaws. There are three Members: Virginia Bleu Knight, Daniel Friedman, and Karl J. Friston.

The Board of Directors is the primary governing body of the Active Inference Institute. The Board provides strategic direction, fiduciary oversight, and institutional accountability. Board members are responsible for the long-term health and mission alignment of the Institute. The Board meets regularly; its governing documents, such as the Bylaws, are publicly available. Current officers: Daniel Friedman (President and Treasurer) and Alexandra Mikhailova (Vice-President and Secretary).

The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) provides scientific and scholarly guidance to the Institute. SAB members are experts in Active Inference, computational neuroscience, cognitive science, and related fields. The SAB advises on research directions, educational content, project selection, and the scientific quality of Institute outputs. SAB members may serve as Facilitators for research projects and learning groups. Институт активного вывода — это некоммерческая организация без цели получения прибыли (501(c)(3)), возглавляемая волонтёрами и направленная на повышение доступности, строгости и практической применимости активного вывода. Мы приветствуем людей из всех слоев общества, часовых поясов и уровней подготовки.

Программы Института превращают интерес в участие через волонтерство, стажировки, наставничество, стипендии, партнерства, филантропию, гранты и открытые источники. Все программы открыты для людей с любым уровнем подготовки и опыта.

Проекты преобразуют общие идеи в репозитории, научные результаты, инфраструктуру обучения, медиа, мероприятия и прикладную работу.

EduActive — образовательное подразделение Института. Оно включает в себя Текстовую группу, курсы, работу по онтологии, журнал «Активное выводы», аудиовизуальное производство, сезонные школы и связанные образовательные инициативы. Проекты EduActive связывают Активное выводы с учебной инфраструктурой, педагогикой и общественными образовательными ресурсами.

ReInference — это исследовательский и разработческий отдел Института. Он проводит программные проекты, теоретическую работу, прикладное моделирование, геопространственный анализ, инженерию знаний и междисциплинарные исследования в рамках концепции Активного вывода. Проекты ReInference охватывают широкий спектр открытых инструментов и специализированных исследовательских инициатив.
