Grant support is available for work that advances Active Inference research, education, or application in ways consistent with the Institute's mission. Priority areas include: foundational Active Inference research and modeling; educational tools, curricula, and courses; open-source software and tooling; interdisciplinary applications in health, ecology, economics, cognition, and social systems; and infrastructure for the broader Active Inference Ecosystem.
Proposals that produce publicly accessible outputs are particularly well-suited to Institute support.

In June 2025, the Survival and Flourishing Fund awarded the Institute a $270,000 grant supporting the AI Capabilities & Alignment Consensus Project (AICACP), a multi-year initiative on AI capabilities, alignment, and regulation. The Institute has also submitted grant applications that were not funded: a 2022 application for "Systems Modeling and Cognitive Audits for Hypercert Ecosystems," published on Zenodo; a 2023 application to the National Science Foundation's Pathways to Enable Open-Source Ecosystems (POSE) program; a 2024 application to the Future of Life Institute for "FarmWorks: Decentralized AI Agents for Personalized Solutions"; a 2024 application to the Foresight Institute for "VILLAGE (Validating Inference for Large-scale Agent Governance Ecosystems)"; a 2025 application to the Dana Foundation's Dana Frontiers program for "Increasing the Accessibility and Applicability of Active Inference: Generative Playbooks and Open-Source Summer School Curriculum Development"; and a 2025 application to the Google.org Accelerator: Generative AI.
None of these six were funded.

Grant-funded work often runs in parallel with fellowship or partnership. Fellows may use grants to support their sustained work.
Partners may pursue grants collaboratively with the Institute. Philanthropy is a complementary pathway for project support that does not require a formal grant process.
